Generative Engine Optimization

(GEO)

An academic term for optimizing content to appear in AI-generated answers, introduced in a 2023 research paper by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi. Also known as LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization), GEO is largely interchangeable with AEO in practice. The terms emerged from different communities (academia vs. marketing) but describe the same discipline of earning visibility in AI search results.

What is generative engine optimization? 

GEO sits inside an SEO program rather than beside it. The people doing the work are usually the same ones handling technical SEO, content, and structured data. What changed is the target. Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. GEO optimizes for retrieval and synthesis, where a model pulls from several sources and builds one answer.

Google is direct about this. Its guidance on generative AI features says established SEO practices still apply, because AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same core ranking and quality systems as classic Search. There is no separate checklist that unlocks AI visibility.

Why is generative engine optimization important?

 

Google updated its generative AI guidance in July 2026 and reaffirmed that the fundamentals carry over. That matters for planning. It means the choice is not SEO or GEO. The choice is whether your existing pages are structured well enough to be lifted, or whether they only work when someone clicks through and reads them.

In June 2026, it settled the measurement question. Search Console added performance reporting for generative AI surfaces. AI visibility moved out of the anecdote column and into a report you can pull.

That matters because the old objection was reasonable. When a model answers the question outright, the click becomes optional, and a page can inform thousands of people while showing almost nothing in sessions. Teams had no clean way to tell a citation from a coincidence.

How generative engine optimization works

 

Generative engines follow a sequence, and each stage asks something different of your content.

  1. Retrieval. The engine gathers candidate sources from a search index. Pages that are slow, blocked, or thin never enter the pool, so technical health is the entry requirement.
  2. Grounding. The engine builds its answer from the retrieved text using retrieval-augmented generation. Sentences that only make sense in context are hard to lift, so definitions and direct answers need to stand alone.
  3. Query fan-out. One user question becomes several related searches across subtopics. Coverage of adjacent questions matters more than depth on a single phrase.
  4. Citation. The engine attributes the answer to its sources. Clear authorship, structured data, and traceable claims make a page easier to credit.

GEO vs SEO 

The difference is the unit of visibility. SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes for inclusion in a single generated answer.
