Landing Page

A landing page is a standalone web page built to drive one specific action from visitors who arrive from a marketing campaign. It removes the choices a normal page offers, leaving one meaningful next step.
About this word

What is a landing page?

‍

Landing pages are built by paid media, demand generation, and CRO teams, usually one page per campaign or ad group. They sit between the ad and the conversion. That position is why they are often built, tested, and measured separately from the main website.

‍

Before dedicated landing pages existed, campaign traffic went to a homepage. A homepage has to serve everyone, so it offers navigation, multiple products, and several possible next steps. That serves someone browsing and works against someone who clicked a specific offer.

‍

Google treats the two differently in practice. Landing page experience is one of the three components behind Quality Score in Google Ads, alongside expected click-through rate and ad relevance. Google is also clear that Quality Score is a diagnostic tool rather than an input in the ad auction.

‍

Why are landing pages important?

‍

The decision is narrower than most teams treat it. You are choosing whether campaign traffic gets a page built for one action or a page built for browsing.

‍

That choice carries a cost in paid search. Because landing page experience feeds the components evaluated at auction time, a weak page can raise what you pay for the same ad position. The page is not just a conversion surface. It is part of your media efficiency.

‍

The stakes have moved since AI Overviews expanded across informational results. Many of those queries now get answered on the results page, so fewer people click through at the top of the funnel. The clicks that do arrive tend to come from people closer to a decision. Sending that visitor into general navigation wastes the most valuable traffic you get.

‍

How a landing page works

‍

  1. A single conversion goal. One action defines the page, whether that is a form fill, a demo request, a purchase, or a download. Adding a second goal splits attention and usually lowers both.
  2. Message match with the source. The headline echoes the specific promise made in the ad, email, or post that sent the visitor. When the two do not match, people leave before reading anything else.
  3. A conversion mechanism. Usually a form, sometimes a checkout or a booking widget. Field count matters here, since every additional field is another reason to abandon.
  4. Reduced navigation. Header menus, footer links, and sidebars are trimmed or removed. The goal is not to trap anyone. It is to stop offering alternatives to the action you asked for.
  5. Tracking on the conversion action. The conversion has to fire reliably into your ad platforms and analytics. Without that, you cannot tell whether the page or the traffic is the problem.

‍

How to measure landing page performance

‍

The primary metric is conversion rate.

‍

Conversion rate = (conversions ÷ page visits) × 100

‍

For a normal range, Unbounce's Conversion Benchmark Report puts the median landing page conversion rate at 6.6% across industries, drawn from 464 million visits to 41,000 landing pages. By industry the median runs from 3.8% in SaaS to 12.3% in events and entertainment.

‍

Two cautions on using that number. It is a median rather than an average, because a handful of outliers skews averages badly on this metric. And what counts as a conversion varies by page, so a newsletter signup at 5% and a high-value demo request at 5% are not comparable results.

‍

Secondary metrics worth watching alongside it: form abandonment rate, mobile versus desktop conversion rate, and cost per conversion by traffic source.

‍

Types of landing pages

‍

  • Lead capture page. Collects contact details through a form in exchange for something. The most common type in B2B.
  • Click-through page. Warms the visitor with detail, then sends them to a checkout or signup flow rather than converting on the page.
  • Squeeze page. A short page asking for one piece of information, usually an email address.
  • Sales page. Long-form and built to close a purchase in a single visit, common for higher-priced offers.
  • Event or webinar registration page. Built around a date, an agenda, and a registration form.
  • Location page. Serves a specific city or service area, and doubles as an organic search asset.
